Johnny's dream foursome would include his brother, Arnold Palmer and Walter Hagen, with maybe Ben Hogan thrown in to offset Hagen. John turned professional in 1967. He played on the PGA Tour from 1968-1980 and had three 2nd place finishes. In 1995, at the age of 50, John began playing on the Champions Tour. His level of success eclipsed his PGA years. In addition to winning the 2003 Senior PGA Championship, he has enjoyed more than seventy top-10 finishes on the Champions Tour and more than $8 million in earnings. Jacobs started in junior golf in Southern California. In 1951, he won the USGA National Junior Championship. At sixteen, he went to the semi-finals of the USGA National Amateur, an accomplishment that won him a spot in the Masters at the age of seventeen. Jacobs still holds the record of being the youngest to compete at Augusta. In 1952, he won the National JC Junior Championship and lost in the semi-finals of the USGA National Junior Championship.

During his career, Jacobs had 2nd place finishes in two major championships. He lost the 1964 US Open to Ken Venturi by four strokes and was runner-up in a playoff at The Masters in 1966. Like most pro golfers of his generation, Jacobs earned his living primarily as a club professional during his thirties and forties. He was the Director of Golf and Director of the "Tournament of Champions" (Mercedes Championship) at La Costa Hotel and Spa and The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, California for more than 20 years. He joined the Senior PGA Tour (now known as the Champions Tour) in 1985 and continued to play into the 2000s. His last appearance was at the 2003 Senior PGA Championship, an event that his brother, John Jacobs, won. He continues to compete in the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf tournament held yearly in Savannah, Georgia. Tommy lives in Leland, North Carolina.
